Stazioni di posta e Regie Strade Maestre: uno sguardo sulla mobilità e le comunicazioni nel Granducato di Toscana

Abstract

Riassunto
Il contributo intende descrivere e analizzare alcune delle principali stazioni di posta situate lungo le Regie Strade Maestre toscane dal punto di vista architettonico e funzionale, con ampio uso di documentazione storica. Il sistema delle stazioni postali medicee era già ben sviluppato a partire dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo, ma dal XVIII secolo il governo lorenese avviò una serie di progressive trasformazioni infrastrutturali sul territorio. In una prima fase, i nuovi granduchi attuarono diversi interventi di restauro e risistemazione di antichi edifici già adibiti all’accoglienza adattandoli alle esigenze di una mobilità di respiro sempre più «internazionale»; in un secondo momento, a partire dall’ultimo ventennio del XVIII secolo, i Lorena avviarono la costruzione di nuove strade e infrastrutture sempre più all’avanguardia. A seguito di questi interventi, le stazioni di posta divennero poli di forte attrazione sui territori di riferimento, capaci di fornire utili servizi non solo alle persone e alle merci in transito, ma anche agli stessi abitanti del circondario. La documentazione cartografica, grafica e descrittiva presente nei fondi delle varie Comunità regionali assieme ai dati desunti dal Catasto Lorenese ha permesso di ricostruire un sistema complesso e funzionale di mobilità e comunicazione che è rimasto pressoché immutato per almeno un secolo, fino al successivo e definitivo sviluppo della viabilità toscana con l’introduzione delle strade ferrate. In questo contributo verranno prese in considerazione solo alcune delle Regie strade postali presenti al compimento del catasto lorenese (1834) e verrà effettuata una
selezione rispetto alle stazioni di posta esistenti.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze some of the main postal stations located along the Tuscan Royal Roads from an architectural and functional point of view, with an extensive use of historical documentation. The system of grand-ducal post stations was already developed starting from the second half of the 16th century, but from the 18th century the Lorraine government began a series of progressive infrastructural transformations in all the region. In a first phase, the new grand dukes carried out restoration and
rearrangement on ancient buildings already used as post offices, inns, or farms, adapting them to the needs of an increasingly «international» scope of mobility; later, starting from the last twenty years of the eighteenth century, the Lorraines started the construction of new roads and cutting-edge infrastructures. Following these interventions, the post-stations became poles of attraction in the territories of reference, capable of providing useful services not only to people and goods in transit, but also to the inhabitants of the surrounding area.
The cartographic, graphic and descriptive documentation present in the archives of the various Tuscan communities and the data taken from the Lorraine Cadastre has made possible to reconstruct a complex and functional system of mobility and communication which remained practically unchanged for at least a century, until the subsequent development of the road system Tuscany with the introduction of railways. In this contribution we have considered only some of the Royal postal roads present at the completion of the Lorraine cadastre (1834) and we made a selection of the existing post stations.
